Proud and discriminating Britons hate to admit it, but sometimes creative and delicious things pop out of a Yank laboratory. One of them is Pepsi Cola, which has been around for a little over 102 years. Although it was developed twelve years after its longstanding rival, it has proven to be a successful competitor. Pepsi Cola was invented in 1898 by Caleb Bradham, who wanted to create a flavorful fountain drink that could aid in digestion and boost energy. He perhaps also sought to capitalize on the recent interest in carbonated, manufactured beverages.
He succeeded in that, and today Pepsi Cola is as widely circulated as any other soft drink, and it continues to vie for dominance as the world’s favorite caffeine drink. Some speculate that only coffee stands in its way. The brand itself remained obscure for its first forty years of business, and it was considered something of an off-brand. That said, drinkers never lost enthusiasm, and the drink was revitalized when it as purchased and repackaged by Roy C. Megargel. He had the formula redesigned, and it has never been more popular.
Clever advertising was responsible for Pepsi Cola ‘s rise during the Great Depression, and again during World War II. Princes were slashed by half during the 1930s, thus making it the least expensive common soft drink in the country. During the 1940s, Pepsi Cola took the very progressive step and advertised to black audiences. They thus exploited an enormous niche that was largely ignored by their competitors.
Selling well straight through the cold war, in the 1970s, Pepsi Cola issued to Americans the Pepsi Challenge. Apparently, the drink passed the test, because more people were testing the brand than ever before. It succeeded at parties and basic private enjoyment. Pepsi Cola remains a unique and unrivaled formula, but that is only half the reason why it tastes so good. For people who understand its long and proud history, heritage is another reason why Pepsi tastes so good.
